One of the most common questions we hear from new and seasoned collectors alike is whether they should purchase an original artwork or a limited edition print.
Many assume that original art is always the better investment and that prints are simply a more affordable alternative. The reality is more nuanced.
The right choice depends on your goals as a collector. Are you buying for personal enjoyment, investment potential, accessibility to blue-chip artists, or building a long-term collection?
Understanding the differences can help you make more confident and informed decisions.
Getting to Know the Artist Behind the Work
Havoc Hendricks is known for an artistic approach he calls “Detailed Minimalism.” His paintings are striking from a distance, but move closer and an entirely different world begins to emerge.
Inspired by the intricate patterns and structures found in nature, his work combines bold, minimal compositions with remarkable detail. It's this contrast that makes his paintings so compelling: what initially appears simple becomes increasingly complex the longer you look.
As Havoc puts it, “The closer you get the more detail there is to suck you in.”
During the artist talk, guests had the opportunity to hear directly from Havoc about his inspiration, creative process and the thinking behind his work. The conversation offered a glimpse into the balance between precision and spontaneity that defines his practice.
One of his guiding philosophies? “Be extremely organized so that I have the freedom to be chaotic.”
We can appreciate that.
A Little Live Painting, Too
Of course, hearing an artist describe their process is one thing. Watching it happen is another.
Havoc treated guests to a live painting demonstration, offering a firsthand look at how his intricate compositions begin to take shape.
It was a chance to see the patience, control and attention to detail behind work that can appear almost effortless when finished.
Between the demonstration and the artist talk, the evening offered something we always love bringing to the gallery: an opportunity to connect with the person behind the artwork.
Good Art. Good Company. Very Good Pours.
Beyond the art itself, the evening was about bringing people together.
With wine and whiskey flowing, guests spent time exploring Havoc's work, asking questions and connecting with fellow collectors. A few pieces even found new homes along the way.
There's something special about seeing a collector connect with an artwork after hearing the artist explain the ideas and experiences behind it. Suddenly, the piece on the wall has an entirely new story.
A huge thank you to Havoc and his partner Laura for making the trip to Whistler, and to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so memorable.
