As we welcome Roman Feral to Whistler Contemporary, we’re taking a closer look at the ideas and contrasts that define his sculptural practice. Known for transforming symbols of luxury and nature into moments suspended in time, Roman’s work explores refinement, fragility, and the quiet tension between permanence and impermanence. In this conversation, we spoke with Roman about his relationship with material, from butterflies to bronze and glass, and how discipline and patience shape both his process and his life. He reflects on the contrasts that inform his creative voice, the cultural symbols he chooses to immortalize, and the importance of remaining grounded in the studio, where authenticity begins. Read the blog to discover the perspective of an artist who transforms fleeting beauty into timeless form.

Your sculptures often feel like moments suspended in time - delicate, powerful, and impossibly precise. What emotion or truth are you hoping people experience when they see your work for the first time?

I want the viewer to feel a moment suspended in time—a quiet tension between refinement, beauty, and impermanence.

Sculpture is a dialogue between the artist and the material. Can you share a moment in your career when the material itself taught you something: about your process, your patience, or even about yourself?

I work with materials ranging from real butterflies to bronze, stainless steel, and glass. Each demands precision and patience. That discipline has shaped not only my process, but the way I move through life.

Art has the ability to transform the ordinary into something transcendent. What inspires you to choose the subjects or symbols you immortalize in your sculptures, and what story do you hope they continue telling long after they leave your studio?

I choose symbols that already carry cultural and emotional meaning and transform them into timeless works. Once a piece leaves the studio, the story continues with the collector.

As an artist whose work now reaches audiences around the world, how do you stay connected to the vulnerability and authenticity required to create? What keeps you grounded and inspired in the midst of success?

I stay grounded in the studio. Away from noise and recognition, the work remains honest—that’s where everything real begins.
